Angora

ANGORA (ANKARA): This prison camp was located in the Vilayet of Angora in Anatolia in west central Asia Minor. An important commercial center, Angora was 220 east-southeast of Constantinople and was built on a hill. The city lay on the Constantinople to Baghdad Railway line, on the Angora River. The Turks incarcerated Allied prisoners, primarily 300 British POW's, in a prison camp outside of the city. The Turks employed most of these men in a labor detachment, constructing a single narrow gauge railroad line between Angora and Erzerum. In August 1917, the Turks transferred many of these men to Yozgad.
